A look at winners and losers in Matchweek 27 of the SPL

Al Hilal have managed to cement their position at the top of the Saudi Professional League table in Matchweek 27.

 The Blue Waves extended the gap with Al Shabab, who placed in the second position, to 4 points, with only three games left in the competition.

Following this week’s results, let’s do a recap of the games.

Winners:

Al Taawoun:

Al Taawoun are aiming to qualify to the AFC Champions League next seasons, after their impressive performance throughout the campaign. They are currently sharing the third position with Al Ittihad, and they aim to win all their upcoming games to book their qualification ticket.

Al Nassr:

Al Nassr sealed their second consecutive victory in the league under the new head coach Mano Menezes, who managed to improve his team’s performance. Najd’s Knights eye to secure a place in the AFC Champions League, and they are keen to win all their upcoming games. They are currently in the fifth position with 42 points, but they will also need the help of the other teams in order to achieve their goal.

Al Faisaly:

Al Faisaly have officially avoided relegation after defeating Damac 2-1. Al Faisaly pulled an impressive comeback in the game and managed to achieve an important victory. After winning their relegation battle, they are now focusing on beating Al Taawoun in the Kings Cup final to clinch the title.

Losers:

Al Shabab:

Al Shabab’s league hopes are close to beshuttered after they were beaten by Ettifaq 4-3. Despite that they took the early lead with two goals, Al Shabab failed to come out victorious as Ettifaq’s Walid Azaro shined and netted a brace, to gift his team a precious win and to add more struggles for Al Shabab.

Al Ittihad:

Al Ittihad could not reduce the gap with Al Hilal, following their draw with Damac. Al Ittihad also failed to make use of Al Shabab’s loss, as they could not reach the second position by only gaining one point.

Al Hilal:

Al Hilal earned a point against relegation battlers Al Batin, as the defending champions were denied to extend the gap to 7 points with Al Shabab. Gomis could not save his team in the dying minutes of the game, after he failed to convert the ball into the back of the net. However, despite gaining only one point, the Blue Waves managed to cement themselves at the top of the SPL table and to extend the gap with Al Shabab to 4 points.

Al Hilal must do a lot of hard work in the upcoming games to protect their four-point lead, as they are set to face Al Ahli, Al Taawoun, and Al Faisaly respectively in the last three games of the competition.
