Ramos couldn’t believe how much Pique was earning at Barça
The information revealed by Lluis Canut and later amplified by Toni Frieros in SPORT on Gerard Pique’s salary brought consequences.
Firstly, Barcelona released a statement denying the figures reported and Pique himself posted an image of his apparent wage slip on social media trying to deny that his wage was as much as 28 million euros annually.
And it extended beyond Barça, because it wasn’t just around Camp Nou where there was anger. Sergio Ramos and his camp were also upset. And we will explain why.
Ramos, like many players, negotiates his contracts with the salary of his contemporaries in mind, regardless of where they play. In talks to renew his deal with Real Madrid, Pique’s name always appeared.
“Pique earns this much, well I want the same or more“, was one of his arguments to put pressure on Madrid president Florentino Perez.
When Ramos realised that Pique, for many years, had earned more than him, he was put on red alert, indignant that the information had passed him by.
