Juventus may cut Chiesa from initial Champions League squad

Juventus are reportedly considering leaving Federico Chiesa off their Champions League squad registration list as they carefully manage his recovery.

The 24-year-old Italian winger suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during a 4-3 win over Roma on January 9 this year, and he’s been sidelined ever since, slowly working back to fitness. Whilst some indications suggested that he’d recover in the autumn, Massimiliano Allegri does not want to take any risks.

As reported by Tuttosport, Juventus are considering cutting Chiesa from the Champions League squad list for the first half of the season, allowing him to manage his recovery carefully. Allegri wants the 24-year-old to be a star again in Turin, and so isn’t planning to take any risks.

The decision means that Chiesa would be registered for the Champions League during the winter transfer window.

Allegri made his feelings clear in a press conference yesterday, highlighting that he’d “be happy if Chiesa returned before the World Cup break. We cannot dream, I’m very realistic, at this moment I cannot rely on Federico.”

Chiesa has scored 18 goals and provided 14 assists in 61 appearances for Juventus.
