Verratti: Italy deserved the title, Messi’s arrival is incredible

Italy and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti said the Azzurri ‘deserved’ to win EURO 2020 this summer and revealed he ‘didn’t believe’ Lionel Messi would arrive at Parc des Princes. ‘Having him here is incredible’.

Verratti was a key member of the Italy squad that went all the way in the European Championship, beating England on penalties in the Final at Wembley.

The former Pescara midfielder said the Azzurri players were confident ahead of the competition.

“Even if we never said it publicly, we knew we were a team with balls, Verratti told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Even in difficulty, whether it was me or [Manuel] Locatelli, [Federico] Chiesa or [Domenico] Berardi, we felt we could make a difference, united with solidarity. We deserved the title.

The crazy summer continued when Verratti returned to Paris, as he was joined by Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, but most of all, the arrival of former Barcelona star Messi.

“Having him here is incredible, Verratti said about the Argentine’s arrival. “I didn’t believe it until I saw him. We already knew each other.

“Maybe he doesn’t talk much, but he has great a personality, and you can feel him on the pitch. He’s a leader, a champion loved by those who don’t support Barcelona or PSG as well.

“For me, he is the best in history, he’s technical and selfless. I don’t think he will have any difficulty in getting the starting position.
