Qatar withdraw from 2021 Copa America

Qatar national team pulled out of 2021 Copa America, scheduled next June in Argentina and Colombia.

Qatar’s decision came after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) decided to move forward the dates of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers to June.

On a similar note, Australia withdrew from the competition for the same reason.

2021 Copa America will be held in Argentina and Colombia between 11 June and 10 July, with Qatar and Australia were both invited to participate in the competition.

In 2019 Copa America, Qatar and Japan participated in the tournament as the two invited teams.

Gonzalo Belloso, the secretary general of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), said that the tournament will be held with 10 or 12 sides.

The 2021 Copa America competition was expected to see the participation of 12 teams, split into northern and southern groups, with the top two teams of each group reaching the semi-finals.
